The project

what is it?

Drafts To Laughs is my channel about how stand-up actually works. Every video starts with a real question about the craft, gives my take on it, then cuts to live footage of the idea being tested in front of a real audience.

The bits and the craft get equal weight. No theory-only essays, and no clip shows without a lesson.

On camera it's just me, keyed into a world of drafting paper, where the notes, the plans and the diagrams draw themselves around me as I talk.

The format

how a video works

  1. 01

    the question

A real question about the craft. What do you do when the room isn't with you?

  2. 02

    my take

What I think and why, with the notes and the plans drawn round me as I go.

  3. 03

    on stage

Then the proof: the idea, tested live in front of a real audience.

The lesson lands and the laugh lands.

So, I did a comedy competition…

Seven acts, ten minutes each, and the audience scoring every one of us on paper out of five. I took a set to the Thatcham Festival comedy competition and won the pro slot.

This is the whole thing: how I prepared, what I cut for that room, what I wrote about the town, and then the set itself.

One technique at a time, from the people who do it best. Real comedians are only ever drawn in 2D, and with respect.
